AIA Sustainable Building Tour Held at 990 Ocean Front

85 Architects explored Laguna Beach’s first LEED home on a guided tour by Architect Mark Singer

Laguna Beach, 03.03.2011
990 Ocean Front: an aesthetically stunning and highly sustainable home shared its secrets with 85 architects last Thursday as Mark Singer, AIA, hosted a guided tour through the property. Guests gathered in the garage of the newly completed oceanfront home as Singer introduced the project and the project team. A presentation was given on the initial design and TRESOR’s goal to incorporate sustainability into the home without sacrificing Singer’s design vision. This was Singer’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design project with TRESOR; the home is currently pending Platinum certification (the highest level obtainable from the United States Green Building Council). Singer outlined the 8 categories of LEED, highlighting a few of the many features that helped the building earn its credits.

Almost Done!

Landscaping is going in, furniture is being placed, details are being completed. I have to say this is the most exciting phase in the development process. What an incredible experience!

My Favorite Detail of the Day: Backlit Floated Drywall

1) The lower level ceilings (kitchen and living areas) are warmed by the soft, even light behind the floated drywall.
2) The seamless transition of the ocean level fireplace to the ceiling is flooded with light, softening the hard lines of the modern home.
3) The detail of the stacked quartzitic limestone on the ocean level fireplace is highlighted as light from within the drywall spills out from above.
4) The top of the exposed concrete wall in the living room draws the eye from the Pacific Ocean to the sprawling gallery with gentle light

Ken Fischbeck really knows how to build a house- let me tell you. As we were finishing up 932 Rembrandt last year and the final details were being put into the home I remember how impressed I was of his meticulosity. In fact, the fine details of the home is what sold it. The buyer specifically stated that his wife walked through the home and knew it was for her when she saw the glass opening on the base of the stairs in the main living area.

Ken has done an incredible job at 990 Ocean Front with the special details that make the house incomparable to any other. There have been a few instances where something wasn’t exact and Ken wouldn’t let it fly. He simply refuses to move on unless everything is how it’s supposed to be. Ken’s vision is carried out through the entire design and construction process of the home and that is what makes me so proud to be a part of these projects. Not only does he have great taste, but his vision is contagious with the subcontractors and that is what makes our homes successful builds.
